X-Lites Incubator Workshop

X-Lites Incubator Workshop

The X-Lites Incubator Workshop recently concluded a productive two-day session, structured around the “Strategic Doing” framework developed by Purdue University’s Agile Strategy Lab. This methodology served as the backbone of the time together, designed to help diverse groups form action-oriented collaborations quickly, pivot toward measurable outcomes, and maintain flexibility in a rapidly evolving research landscape.

All discussions were centered on a single, ambitious framing question:

“What would you do if you had access to a light source that you could configure with any arbitrary structure—in space, time, intensity, spectrum, and polarization?”

To tackle this challenge, the incubator was organized into three primary focus areas:

  1. Creation, Transport & Diagnostics
  2. Scientific Applications at Non-Relativistic Intensities
  3. Scientific Applications at Relativistic Intensities

Each area was divided into two dedicated tables, managed by a Table Guide and a Knowledge Keeper. These leaders were contacted and trained in advance to ensure the sessions remained focused and productive. Participants had the autonomy to choose the table that best aligned with each expertise and interests.

The workshop highlighted the link between the @The X-Lites Network and the European NEXT – COST Action 22148, emphasizing their shared goals in advancing extreme light research.

Laura Cattaneo, member of the COST NEXT Core Group participated in the incubator, presenting not only her current research but also introducing the European network to a broader international audience—helping extend its reach beyond Europe and into other continents. Across three focus areas, participants defined six Pathfinder projects with clear three-month action plans. The collaborative work continues through follow-up meetings, with outcomes to be shared in June 2026.

Looking forward to seeing how these global connections translate into impactful science.
